SPN!
I quite enjoyed this episode. Also, there's been a lot of John-bashing over at the TWoP forums, but here's a thought about the timeline:
Sam is born in 1983, right? And Adam is born in 1990. Meaning that when John finds out about his 12-year-old son Adam, it's a bit after Sam has left for Stanford? It seems to me that this might have had some effect on the way John tried to be a parent to Adam. When he learns about Adam, he has fairly recently "lost" a son (to a normal life) and so perhaps he decides to try to do things differently with Adam, resulting in baseball games etc?
John has many things to apologize for, but I don't think this is one of them.
