Dishes: the secret behind the end of many a friendship

A little background: I live with five other girls in a college-owned apartment. We have a small kitchen with not a great deal of counter space. We divided up chores so that they would rotate each week. One of these chores is emptying the dish-drying rack, because we have no dishwasher and everyone is supposed to wash their dishes by the end of the day.

Now, most people are pretty good about this. When it's the turn of the person who lives with her boyfriend, she actually makes an effort to come back once a day and empty the dish rack. Other people will do it immediately if you point it out to them.

ONE of my apartment mates, though, simply will not do it. If you point it out to her, she says "Yeah, I'll do it later" or "I have a ton of homework" or "I just put lotion on my hands" or "I have to go to bed right now." The problem has gotten so bad that it is IMPOSSIBLE to wash dishes for lack of a place to put them.

I just don't understand why it's so hard for her to PUT THE FUCKING DISHES AWAY. Everyone else does it, and everyone else has schoolwork and social commitments and boy troubles. I'm really worried that someone (probably not me, I'm very non-confrontational in real life) will get in a huge fight with her about it. But part of me thinks AT LEAST THEN THE DISHES WILL BE PUT AWAY.

Aaaaargh.

Testing the cross-posting from dreamwidth, since I'm going to make an actual effort to start posting at dreamwidth instead of livejournal.

Very, very mixed reaction to this episode. On the one hand, there were certainly funny bits. I thought old!Dean did a pretty decent job, and while I dislike Bobby's assertion that being in a wheelchair means you're useless, I understood where he's coming from - his life and conception of usefulness have centered around being a physically powerful and strong person, and so to him being paralyzed would certainly be a huge blow.

However. While I could enjoy the one-off episodes back when the boys were just trying to stop Lilith from breaking the seals, the apocalypse is here now. I'm ready to see them fighting. Standalone episodes are very weird, tonally speaking, when they come in the midst of mytharc-heavy episodes. Also, I found this episode a little confusing when it came to who was bad or good - which I suppose was the point, but given the usual lack of subtlety when it comes to drawing moral lines on Supernatural, it's confusing rather than subtle when they do something like create a witch who also does good. If the writers want to keep that up, though, I'm perfectly okay with it - it just needs to be consistent..

Poor, poor Jeremy. I feel so terrible for that kid. Which means, I suppose, that the actor is selling it. I was really appreciating Elena's admission that she, too, would like to forget, but can't - UNTIL it turned out that it was because she was in love with Stefan, not because she couldn't close her eyes to what's happening around her. Please, Elena. There are girls growing up today who have read Twilight and have never heard of Buffy. It's up to you to show them that just because a boy's a vampire, it doesn't mean you have to cave to his every whim.

God, that's a scary thought. Imagine those thirteen- and fourteen-year-old girls, reading the entire Twilight series and thinking they should model themselves on Bella Swann instead of Buffy Summers. That's really fucking sad.

New episode of White Collar tonight! If you're not watching this show, you should be. It's hilarious. And has the slash pretty much built in. Not quite as much as Vampire Diaries, but still.

State of self

It's been a long, long time since I posted anything of note, so I'll try to summarize.

So, life. Broke up with the boyfriend about a month ago because organic chemistry is apparently far more interesting than I am (no, I knew I shouldn't have dated a younger guy). Kissed 21 people at the last campus-wide party, but mostly girls and gay guys. Writing has been terribly stalled, but with NaNo beginning in less than 48 hours, that should change soon.

I turned 21, not that it matters much, because being underage certainly hadn't stopped me from drinking. But now I can buy alcohol my own self, so that's kind of cool. Everyone at school is sick, and so I've been slathering myself with hand sanitizer on a regular basis. Parents have been out of the country for nearly a month, and I actually miss them a surprising amount.
As for fandom. Main TV fandom now is Supernatural - I just couldn't get into the new Stargate - and I faithfully watch Lie to Me and House, but haven't sought out fic. Have fallen behind on Dollhouse and Merlin, but still read Merlin fic. Still big on Star Trek, rapidly getting into Glee. Embarrassingly enthusiastic about Vampire Diaries. Also, began watching NCIS and am occasionally obsessed with Tony/Ziva.

Finally, bonus for all Tim Roth (Lie to Me) fans. Hot scenes from a movie featuring him as a prisoner having an affair with a prison dentist (yes, I know). Worth finding on Youtube, it's called "The Captives" and has about 11 parts:

<lj-embed id="11" />

<lj-embed id="12" />

Am I the bitchiest apartment-mate ever? Quite possibly.

I live in an apartment with five (really four) other girls at school. This weekend, three of us went on a brief overnight trip, and somehow the apartment got completely trashed. I don't mean drunkenly, either, which I could actually excuse - I mean that no one bothered to wash a fucking dish, people dumped papers and shit all over everything, and none of the rotating chores got done. It was fucking gross. Of the three girls who were technically 'home' during that time, one (my roommate) lives with her boyfriend most nights and probably never even came home. Which means that TWO GIRLS were responsible for the level of filth when we got back.

I am a messy person, naturally. But I'm very careful not to let common spaces get infected with my mess, and so I resent it when other people can't take their fucking underwear and put it away.

Now on to the super-bitchy part, which is less justified: some of my roommates (the two who messed up the place) eat really, really nasty food. Yesterday, one of them cooked a veggie burger patty, and then ate it with seeds and plain yogurt. The day before that, she took a can of tuna fish and mixed it in the can with oatmeal. Seeing and/or smelling this food makes me feel like puking. My other roommate eats strange stuff, but at the very least it's just strange to me (food she ate in Taiwan), as opposed to strange to the whole world. But dear God, the SMELLS. If someone leaves a half-full can of tuna out in the kitchen one more time, there will be hell to pay.

Fannishly:

This episode was at times cute and at times really uncomfortable. I'm no longer finding it quite so amusing to see Arthur treat Merlin like absolute shit - especially when the message seems to be that Gwen can Change Him with her love. Actually, if he only treats Gwen well and still treats other servants terribly, he hasn't learned his lesson - all he's learned is that he wants into her pants (or dress, as the case may be). I quite enjoy Gwen, and the kiss was very nice, but good lord was Arthur a dick.

I quite liked this episode, and I thought that the Wendell storyline was realistic...up until the "three anonymous donations in the nick of time" bit. Really? We had to have the goodbye scene, and then Cam comes in? Everyone knows they've made donations, why couldn't they skip the heartache of the goodbyes and just tell him, in whatever roundabout socially awkward way, that he'll be able to stay? Thought the bit about Booth's money troubles was out of nowhere (though I suppose hospital bills might've been expensive, except he's on a government health plan which is usually fantastic), and Brennan was surprisingly thick about it - she's supposed to be an anthropologist, she doesn't understand the 'provider' motivation? Sometimes I feel like they make her not understand things just for the sake of not understanding, rather than considering her background and education and whole character.

I quite enjoyed this episode. Also, there's been a lot of John-bashing over at the TWoP forums, but here's a thought about the timeline:

Sam is born in 1983, right? And Adam is born in 1990. Meaning that when John finds out about his 12-year-old son Adam, it's a bit after Sam has left for Stanford? It seems to me that this might have had some effect on the way John tried to be a parent to Adam. When he learns about Adam, he has fairly recently "lost" a son (to a normal life) and so perhaps he decides to try to do things differently with Adam, resulting in baseball games etc?

John has many things to apologize for, but I don't think this is one of them.
